A SUMMER OF SPECIAL EVENTS TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WALKING IN
SHROPSHIRE

This summer there is more than the usual number of events for the walker/rambler in Shropshire. It all begins on Wednesday June 4th, when Church Stretton officially becomes a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town. The launch ceremony will take place at Church Stretton Station at 10.30 a.m. when Kate Ashbrook, the Chairman of the Ramblers’ Association, will do the honours. A series of 4 printed guided walks should be available on the day. The next 4 days are taken up with the Church Stretton Walking Festival, these are all walks between 8 and 13 miles, reasonably strenuous, costing £6 a person, and need to be booked in advance via the Walking Festival web-site.

The next special event is the Ramblers’ Association Shropshire Area Rally on Sunday 29th June, when two walks are available, 11 miles from Welshampton Village Hall at 10 a.m. and 5 miles from Colemere Country Park at 11.a.m., both walks will meet in Ellesmere for the lunch stop. Then in July there will be a whole series of walks organised by individuals and groups from all round Shropshire to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the publication of the Definitive Map of Shropshire rights-of-way.

14 – 25th July an exhibition of maps and photos describing how the Definitive Map for Shropshire was drawn up:

Gallery, Shirehall, Shrewsbury.

Admission – free

Finally there will be a fortnight of walks in south Shropshire starting on Monday 14th July and running to Friday 25th July during which the whole of the revamped southern section of the Shropshire Way will be walked in consecutive sections, led by members of the R.A. and open to any member of the public. These lead up to the official opening on Saturday 26th July, attendance at which is by invitation only.  4 separate walks will converge on the Secret Hills Discovery Centre, where the southern section of the Shropshire Way will be declared officially open by a celebrity, believed to be Kate Ashbrook again! A celebratory party will follow in the evening.
