This list of RA organised walks and those of some of the walking clubs affiliated to the Ramblers throughout Shropshire is regularly updated. Please note that it does not include all walks organised by affiliated clubs. See Events for the RA Festivals of Summer and Winter Walks.

Essential Information

Ability
Most walk descriptions give some idea of the degree of effort involved, but this is very subjective – so much depends on your fitness and experience of country walking. If in doubt, please check with the walk leader in advance.
Non-members (including visitors to the area) are welcome to join RA walks (most groups will ask you to become a member after several walks with them).

Travel. Many walks begin at a town car park (CP) to facilitate car sharing (both to help the environment and because parking in the country is often limited). Groups usually have a suggested contribution for passengers.

Rail Rambles
Rail Rambles, which started in 1989 have enabled thousands of people to enjoy walking in Mid Wales & The Marches without having to use a car. More than 250 walks have been built up over the years and new ones are always being devised. They’re open to everyone – there is no charge and no need to be a member of any organisation. The programme below gives departure times from Shrewsbury station (turn up with your walking boots, food, drink, a waterproof, and a return ticket), but you can also join the group at intermediate stations. Please note that the leaders are empowered to refuse anyone who, in their opinion’ has unsuitable footwear.

‘Strenuous’ or ‘energetic’ refers to steeper climbs and/or a fast pace due to mileage and/or the return train time.

‘Moderate’ – one or two climbs and a steady pace

‘Undulating’ – rolling countryside

‘Moderately easy’ – some gentle climbs and some level ground

Times quoted are correct at the time of publication. Rail Rambles programmes are available at local stations, including Birmingham New St, or from The Ramblers in Wales, Ty’r Cerddwyr, High Street, Gresford, Wrexham LL12 8PT. For more information, phone the organisers, Richard and Barbara Addeyman on 01568 612571.

Note:

Rail Rambles are included with the forthcoming walks – a full list of rail walks for the next 6  months can be found on the Rail Rambles page

Food and Equipment.
Please bring your own food and drink. Always bring waterproofs. All paths can be rough and muddy, so stout shoes or walking boots are essential.
NB The Stiperstones Ridge always requires boots.

Dogs.
Dogs need exercise but cause trouble if they get out of control. Most groups ban them from organised walks. Please check with the walk leader in advance.

RA disclaimer
NB The Association does not accept responsibility for any loss or injury sustained on these walks.

* Some Shropshire Area walks may also be found in the ‘Walksfinder’ at www.ramblers.org.uk, BUT please note  - a different grading system is in use. Local gradings are defined by the group organising the walk and take a number of factors into account, degree of ascent etc. Local gradings will continue to be used on this site.
